The "A" series from Google has always been the king of the mid-range market. However, with the release of the Google Pixel 10A, the line between "budget" and "flagship" is getting blurry—and so is the value proposition. At Merlrose, we’ve spent a week with the Pixel 10A, and our conclusion might surprise you: The Pixel 9A might still be the smarter buy.
1. Design: If it Ain't Broke...
Visually, the Pixel 10A is almost identical to its predecessor. Google has stuck with the recycled aluminum frame and the iconic "visor" camera bar. The only real change? A slightly more matte finish on the back glass which helps with grip.
- Screen: 6.1-inch Actua Display (120Hz). It's bright, but identical to the 9A's panel.
- Durability: IP67 rating remains, which is standard for this price point.
2. Tensor G5: The Real Star?
The biggest internal jump is the Tensor G5 chip. Unlike previous Tensors, this one is manufactured by TSMC, meaning it runs cooler and is more efficient.
The Catch: While the benchmarks are higher, you won't feel the difference in daily tasks like Instagram, TikTok, or WhatsApp compared to the Pixel 9A. Unless you are a heavy mobile gamer, the extra power feels "overkill" for an A-series phone.
3. Cameras: AI Over Hardware
Google is using the same 64MP main sensor from last year. The "upgrade" comes from Magic Editor 2.0 and Video Boost. These AI features are impressive, but guess what? Most of them are being pushed to the Pixel 9A via software updates anyway.
